Enjoy All Of Your Favorite Movie Classics On Satellite And Cable

There is a reason movies become classics. The stories a good and the performers are great. Often in the old movies the story line was very simple, but a great actor can take a plain Jane role and turn it into a must see event. For example, in a Charlie Chaplin movie the entire plot was based on him trying to get home for dinner. He would take this simple act that everyone can do every day and turn into an event of hilarious proportions.

The best reason to watch classic movies is that they are very family friendly. Many of the classic movies didn't have sex, cursing, or violence. Even though some of these things may have been part of the plot they were not shown in graphic detail, but implied. This makes it easier for children to watch and does not give them night mares. It was Alfred Hitchcock who said "there is nothing more frightening than an unopened door". And that is a very true statement from a horror film genius.

There are now many channels on cable and satellite television that allows you to view these classic movies. One of these channels is American Movie Classics (AMC). On this channel there is usually a host of the movie who will give you a summary of what to expect and even some hidden features that can be missed if you aren't looking for them. One of them is actors in small roles before they were famous. It can give a look at what your favorite actor might have experienced before their big break. Another place to find classics is in the video store. There have been many movies redone in recent years. But it is fun to get a copy of the original to see how different or the same they are. How James Dean Became The Original Bad Boy Of Hollywood

James Dean paved the way for bad boys Hollywood history. Boys wanted to be like him, and girls wanted to date him. Critics consistently booed him, calling him a Brando imitation, but now more than a half a century after his death, we can all recognize his role as the original bad boy in Hollywood film.

Born on February 8, 1931 in Marion, Indiana, Dean spent his life bouncing back and forth between this agricultural, rural state and the bright lights of California. When James was still a young boy, his father packed the family up in pursuit of a new career in dental hygiene, the family landed in Santa Monica, California.

Life changed at age eight for Dean when breast cancer claimed his mother's life. A year later, he found himself back in Indiana, living with extended family. He grew up on that farm near Fairmount, Indiana. Fairmount High School planted and garnered a love of drama in Dean. He graduated and moved back to California where he resided with his newly remarried father. After a short stint at Santa Monica College, Dean transferred to UCLA and thus caused an rift and subsequent separation between him and his father.

After some fruitless time in Hollywood, he ventured off to New York City in hopes of making his first big break, and he did. He began to study under Lee Strasberg, a well-known drama instructor. Work began to pick up with a few television and theater roles, then Dean finally caught his big break. Director Elia Kazan was searching for the right actor to Cal in his upcoming film East of Eden. Dean beat out the legendary Paul Newman. Dean's career had finally begun, and shortly thereafter it ended with a life-ending automobile accident, Dean was only 24.

In his short life span, Dean made one major accomplishment: he made himself known. He only had three starring roles, but each one left an indelible impact on viewers. In East of Eden, Dean played Cal Trask, a disenfranchised youth constantly battling for the attention of his father with his brother Aaron. Dean seemed to embrace this role and genuinely relate to Cal because of his own relationship with his dad.

In Rebel Without a Cause, arguably Dean's most famous film, Dean played another rebellious youth. This particular character, Jim, had difficulty forming friendships with others and slowly moves away from his parents. Dean's performance created the image of post-war 1950's teen boy.

Dean's last role, of Jett Rink, in Giant, reflected some of the same traits of his other two roles. He played rags-to-riches Jett Rink who finds his wealth striking oil. This role led to an Oscar Nomination.
Dean's unforgettable performances make him an icon in Hollywood history and a permanent part of the memories of those who see him in film.

How Movies Come To Be Recognized As Classic Movies

Classic films are forever an intriguing part of American life. What qualifies a movie to become a classic is varied as is opinions, but there are some general things that most will agree on. Produced by Warner Brothers and starring Al Jolson, who was a notable musician at the time, "The Jazz Singer" started the movies of Hollywood moving in another direction. Americans were introduced to musicals and talking which wasn't common in the movie world. The drama of the movie could touch people's hearts and souls so you left the theater moved for the first time.

Embracing antiwar and political statements, "All Quiet on the Western Front" was a classic film from 1930. With the book already in print the movie followed a German boy who had the displeasure of WWI personally. This movie brought to light the issues at hand of the violence of the war and with many soldiers returning from war crippled, or wounded if at all, it made an impact. Filmed in the back lots and country in California, this movie brought the pain and suffering felt by many American families in the open. The ability of the filmmakers to make a movie focusing on the harsh realities of the time made this movie an instant classic.

In 1937, Disney released the first full length cartoon and captured audiences like never before. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was a technological feat for the time period. People marveled at the fabulous new technology and families enjoyed the movie together. Including human characters and fantasy ones allowed joy to enter the hearts of all who watched. The story intrigued many as a fairytale that had no violence and ended happily ever after.

There have been many movies to enter the realm of classic status since 1930, allowing generation gaps to close and both males and females to be touched emotionally and spiritually. A classic film will never go out of style as people yearn to be moved on the movie screens even today.

Home Theater Design: Optimum Speaker Placement

The standard theater arrangement is of course a screen at one end of the room, with one central speaker, one speaker to each side of the screen, two speakers providing surround left and right, and sometimes a speaker providing surround rear. If you have your room arranged this way, chances are good that you call it your home theater, and speaker placement is fairly straightforward for you. The ideal placement has the front speakers at the same height from the ground, usually either slightly above or slightly below the display, and the surround speakers at least 60cm above the heads of the viewers.

The front center speaker should ideally be in the same position as the screen; the front left and right speakers should be placed approximately 25 degrees to the left and right of the direction the viewers face, and about the same distance from the viewers; the surround left and surround right speakers should be 90 degrees to the left and right of this direction, and, again, about the same distance from the viewers; and the surround rear, as its name suggests, should be directly behind the viewers. A subwoofer if used can theoretically be placed anywhere in the room.

For many people, and I include myself in this, the design of your home is such that it does not comfortably permit a room set up in this way. After all, unless you are very lucky, the chances are that the room that contains your home theater equipment doubles as your living room, and you will not want it to be dominated by a screen. You may not wish to call it your home theater as such. To solve this problem, you need to draw a scale diagram of your room. Add your intended screen placement to the drawing, along with the seating arrangements (your sofas and chairs), and identify where people will be sitting when they watch movies, and the direction in which they will be looking.

The next thing you need to do is to draw a line from each viewer directly to the screen, which shows the direction in which each viewer faces. Then draw a line angled 25 degrees to the left of the line you have just drawn from the viewer, for each viewer, until it meets the wall. If the speaker is placed anywhere along that line, then it will be at the correct angle for the appropriate viewer. You need to identify a point along the wall fairly close to the position at which these lines reach the wall. This will usually be somewhere near the middle of the collection of lines. You have then identified the optimum home theater placement for your front left speaker.

You now need to do the same thing, but angle the lines 25 degrees to the right of the direction in which the viewers face. With these lines you can identify the optimum home theater placement for the front right speaker.

Repeat for lines angled 90 degrees to the left, 90 degrees to the right, and 180 degrees (a continuation of the line from viewer to screen, but in reverse). With these lines, you can identify the optimum home theater placement for the surround left speaker, the surround right speaker, and the surround rear speaker.

Ideally, the front left and right speakers should be placed at the same distance from each viewer, as should the surround left and right speakers. This will normally not be possible to achieve, so it should be approximated. Far more important are the speaker placement angles for each viewer, which should ideally not be more than about 15 degrees away from the optimum position. Optimum home theater speaker placement depends on minimizing the angle error for each viewer.

Your subwoofer could be placed theoretically at any point in the room, because the ear cannot easily determine the direction of low-frequency sounds. However, you may find that positioning the subwoofer at different parts of the room change the sounds from the subwoofer; some frequencies may be amplified, while others may be reduced, especially if the subwoofer is placed near a wall or corner of the room. It is suggested that you experiment with the placement of your subwoofer until you find a position that you like.

Some other considerations may affect the position in which you place the speakers. You will not want your speakers in a position where they obstruct a path that is regularly walked through, e.g. too close to a doorway. Also, if you do not have magnetically-shielded front speakers, they should not be placed too close to a cathode ray tube (old-style) TV, because they will cause the color purity of the display to be affected. This does not apply to LCD or plasma televisions. Using this approach, you can successfully place your speakers in such a way that you can be proud of your home theater and of your living room at the same time!

Always remember that the idea behind home theater is to set your system up so that you can enjoy movies to the fullest. Some people lose sight of this goal. Whatever you do with your home theater design, don't fall into the trap of over-analyzing your results. Start enjoying those movies!

Spiderman 3 - Your Friendly Neighborhood Blockbuster

In 1962 a young cartoonist, Stan Lee, came up with an idea for a new comic superhero. During an era in which most of our superheroes were muscle-bound adults, young Peter Parker struck an unlikely figure.

An adolescent -- a pimply, gangly short-sighted teen you would expect to be the last kid picked for sports -- Peter Parker was no typical hero. However, his shortcomings struck a chord with a comic-book audience living through those same difficult times; victims of bullies who dreamed of waking up one morning with the power to stop them, to make a difference, to be someone -- anyone -- other than the nerdy kid they saw in the mirror.

Despite being rejected by Marvel Comics, Stan Lee persisted in selling the idea of Spiderman and was picked up by the struggling title "Amazing Fantasy" -- and the rest is history. Within a few years "The Amazing Spiderman" was a mainstream comic book.

Flash forward forty years to the release of Spiderman the movie. Following the success in 2000 of another superhero adaptation, the first X-Men movie, expectations were high for Spidey's first big screen outing. Not one to disappoint, Spiderman became the first movie in history to take $100million in its opening weekend, and the only movie ever to deny a Star Wars film the top spot at the box office.

The second instalment of the Spiderman series did just as well, taking $88million in its opening weekend and setting a record for highest takings on an opening day at over $40million. If enormous profits and critical acclaim weren't enough, Spiderman 2 went on to win the Academy Award for Visual Effects.

So, considering that the Spiderman series has so far taken almost $800million at the US box office -- and much more overseas and in the rental market -- next year's Spiderman 3 has some mighty big boots to fill.

From the look of it director Sam Raimi has every intention of living up to the standards he set for first two movies, and then some. With a budget estimated at $250million, Spiderman 3 will be the most expensive movie ever made, beating the previous record of King Kong's $207million by an enormous margin.

Spiderman 3 will see the return of Harry Osborn (James Franco), still set on avenging his father's death. Following on from the final scenes of Spiderman 2, Osborn will command the technology developed by his father the Green Goblin in his mission to kill Spiderman.

Osborn won't be alone in his quest. Rumor has it that a second villain played by Topher Grace (Mona Lisa Smile, Traffic) will be getting a piece of the action. Based on a villain from the comic book series, Grace will play Venom, a symbiotic life form consisting of an alien lifeform and journalist Eddie Brock.

While principal filming for the third instalment was completed in August 2006, it will take months to complete the complex CGI necessary for the movie. In fact, some key scenes were shot as early as November of 2005 to allow Sony Pictures Imageworks the time to prepare the visual effects.

It seems, then, that with the enormous budget, new villains and mind-blowing visual effects, Spiderman 3 will be aiming to not only live up to success of the first two instalments, but blow them away entirely.
